The Handmade Photograph: Gum Bichromate Printing

Cost: $450 Members, $500 Non Members

Come join us for an introduction to some 19th Century Historic Photographic printing processes.

We will concentrate on Gum bichromate printing, invented in the 1850s and popularized by the Pictorialist Photographers between the 1890s and 1930s, but we hope to go beyond the straight print and expose you to experimenting with this expressive, painterly process.

In this 3-day workshop, we will begin by learning to make separation negatives from your digital images to make contact prints. We will also learn how to safely mix the chemicals used in this process.

Then we will move on to printing 3- or 4-color gum bichromate prints as well as printing gum bichromate over cyanotypes. You will even have the opportunity to create duotone images using this process.

Materials will be provided by The Light Factory, but you will need to bring your own color digital files to create your prints. We will use either Adobe Photoshop or GIMP to create your negatives, but you do not need prior experience with either program.
