A Message from Titus Brooks Heagins
Three years ago, I first stepped into The Light Factory, and I have never felt more welcomed than on that day. Later that year, Kay Tuttle, Executive Director, entrusted me with leading a workshop for emerging photographers, guiding them through the ever-evolving landscape of photography. Reflecting on my own journey, I recognized the critical importance of mentorship—something I lacked at the beginning. I knew firsthand how invaluable it is to have someone to navigate you through challenges, gatekeepers, and the inevitable mistakes that come with striving for high aspirations in a demanding profession. The responsibility of mentoring the next generation of image creators was a meaningful privilege I was honored to accept.
Through several mentorship programs, I have come to see TLF as a vibrant representation of the Charlotte community. The participants, exhibition opportunities, and social and cultural gatherings foster an inclusive and welcoming environment. This nurturing atmosphere was paramount in my decision to continue my association with the organization. I have always felt that my contributions were not only welcomed but also essential, as TLF embodies a significant role in the broader photographic community in Charlotte and the metropolitan area. As photographers capture the lives of city residents, it is crucial that their work embodies not just aesthetic qualities but also compassion, truth, and a profound understanding of the responsibility that comes with a camera’s shutter.
Upon my appointment as Executive Director, I recognized that a pivotal chapter in my career was beginning. I envisioned initiatives that would elevate TLF both regionally and nationally. Here are some of my key goals:
- Increase Membership: Expand our reach to attract more members and diverse voices.
- Exhibition Opportunities: Foster visibility by creating more platforms for regional and nationally recognized photographers to showcase their work.
- “Fine Print” B&W Darkroom: Establish a dedicated space for traditional black-and-white photography, preserving the artistry of printmaking.
- Advanced Classes: Elevate the educational offerings for mid-level and professional photographers to enhance their skills.
- Collaborations: Build stronger partnerships with museums and cultural organizations to enrich the community’s artistic landscape.
To bring these goals to fruition, I seek the support of the Charlotte community. Together, we can ensure that TLF continues to thrive as a long-lasting organization, deeply rooted in goodwill and service to the city it calls home.
