Imagery and Encaustics
with Charity Valentine

This workshop will explore a variety of basic techniques for working with the encaustic medium. Students will be introduced to the required equipment, learn proper safety precautions, and discover how to select and prime a surface. We will also explore the tools and materials needed to begin an encaustic practice. Using layers of wax and pigment, students will create depth and interest by collaging diverse materials with pigments and encaustic medium.

Content Outline:

9 am – 10 am:
Set-up of stations
(Turn on wax pots, ensure temperatures are correct, etc.)

10 am – 10:30 am:
Introduction to materials, tools, and safety precautions

10:30 am – 11 am:
Presentation of examples of work by artists who work in encaustics, and samples of techniques to be demonstrated in workshop

11 am – Noon:
Demonstration of presented techniques

Noon – 1 pm:
Break for lunch

1 – 4 pm:
Hands-on practice

4 pm – 5 pm:
Break down of stations, and pack up materials and supplies
