“For me the printing process is part of the magic of photography. It’s that magic that can be exciting, disappointing, rewarding and frustrating all in the same few moments in the darkroom.”

– John Sexton

EQUIPMENT AND CHEMISTRY /

Our fully equipped and well-maintained community darkroom is one of our best-kept secrets here at The Light Factory. Our space has six enlargers, two of which have the capacity for enlarging up to a 4×5 negative. We also have a full-size film-processing sink with tanks and reels for 35mm and 120mm film, as well as the tanks and the capacity to process 4×5 and 8×10 sheet film. While we primarily use Sprint Systems chemistry for film processing and printing, we also have various alternative developers and toners available.

COST AND SCHEDULING /

Reservations are required to use our darkroom, and payment is due at registration. You can book a single session or multiple sessions at once. The cost for members is $10 an hour (and for non-members, it’s $20 an hour). The hourly charge covers the cost of chemistry and space, but you’ll need to supply your own paper. The darkroom is open from noon to 5:30 pm Wednesday though Saturday (with the exception of noon to 1:30 pm on Tuesdays). If you’re interested in scheduling a time other than the options provided, please call us to set an appointment.

To use the darkroom you must complete our Intro to Black and White Darkroom class, or provide proof of an equivalent.
