THE LIGHT FACTORY PRESENTS 2010 EDUCATOR’S DAY

Free memberships for educators; all teachers encouraged to come, bring friends

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Light Factory announces Educator’s Day, a complimentary reception and tour for all educators with refreshments and giveaways, including free memberships to The Light Factory.  An annual event, the Educator’s Reception will be held Wednesday, Mar. 17 from 3:00 to 6:00pm at The Light Factory’s in Spirit Square. The event is free for all educators to attend, but an RSVP is highly encouraged by calling 704-333-9755 or logging onto www.lightfactory.org.

Throughout the school year, The Light Factory works closely with educators of all grade levels on a host of subjects – not just photography and filmmaking.  Students (and adults) of every age enjoy tours of the Knight and Middleton McMillan galleries, as well as customized activities and workshops in the Museum’s Darkroom-Classroom.  The Light Factory’s Education Team, Jen Crickenberger and Charles Thomas, work with teachers across the Carolinas to craft programs that tie-in with requested curriculums.

For younger students, The Light Factory teaches science-based enrichment programs on the “Eye as a Camera,” and shadow and light.  Grant-based programs for middle and high-school students teach media literacy and use the camera as a tool to break down stereotypes between cultures and language barriers.  Programs like these include “My Family, Our Stories” for English Second as a Language students; “A Unique Perspective” featuring students with Autism; and Cultural Art Exchanges whereby The Light Factory travels teens to unique destinations to connect with their peers.  Past destinations have included Eastern North Carolina, New Orleans and China.  More information about The Light Factory’s Outreach programs can be found at www.lightfactory.org.

The goal of Educator’s Day is twofold: to engage teachers and to show them appreciation for the wonderful jobs they do. The Light Factory Educator's Reception is an "open house" with refreshments during which teachers get a sneak preview of programming that will be coming up for the 2010/2011 school year, which will include:

  • Photography-based exhibitions like “Body & Soul,” an exhibition celebrating the human form featuring artists Joyce Tenneson, Jock Sturges, Mona Kuhn, and Rimma Gerlovina and Valeriy Gerlovin.
  • “New German Cinema” - a film retrospective that highlights ground-breaking auteurs from German Cinema of the 1960s and 70s.
  • Student outreach projects like “Images of Self”, a photography and media literacy project with students at Hawthorne High School.

After a brief tour and presentation, The Light Factory will offer giveaways and drawings for door prizes.  Each educator who attends will receive a free membership to The Light Factory.

The Light Factory is graciously supported by Basic Operating Grants from the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte- Mecklenburg and the North Carolina Arts Council.

The Light Factory is one of only four museums in the United States that promote the power of image through photography and film.  For more than 30 years, The Light Factory has served students, artists and the public at large by offering film screenings, photography exhibits, classes and outreach programs that promote media literacy and self-expression using the most powerful mediums of our time.  The Light Factory is a 501©3, non-profit organization.  To find out more about The Light Factory, or make a donation visit www.lightfactory.org.
