Intro to Photography: DSLR and Mirrorless

Discover the joy of photography while learning how to master your camera.

In this 4 week hands-on course, you will be immediately immersed in photography and will learn how to utilize your camera’s technical settings with ease. Anyone can put a digital camera on auto and get acceptable pictures. This class will help you to use all the technology your camera has to offer so you can make images that go beyond snapshots to express your personal vision. You will:

  • Start with an assignment that helps you to use light and composition to begin to extend your vision
  • You will master the creative controls of exposure and practice with another assignment to apply what you have learned
  • This will include using shutter speed to express motion and using aperture to create dramatic selective focus
  • You will complete three assignments outside of class and two assignments in class
  • The best part of these assignments is the feedback you will receive from your instructor and other students.

Bring a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera or a mirrorless camera (with manual controls), the manual for the camera and at least one empty and formatted memory card for your camera. It is recommended that you bring a journal or notebook!

Instructors: Michael O’Neill, Dick Handshaw

Intermediate Digital Photography: Beyond the Basics

Take Your Photography to the Next Level

A continuation of Intro to Digital Photography, this four week Intermediate level course will empower you with complete creative control through techniques using only manual exposure settings. You will go even more in depth into the capabilities of your camera as a complex tool. This course will also engage you in comprehensive critiques to assist you in keying into your personal creative vision as a photographer.

This class is hands-on and includes in-class critiques and extended shooting assignments in Charlotte and beyond. You will leave this class with a cohesive series of 5-10 images as well as a complete understanding of Manual Exposure settings and control. As an Intermediate student, you will have the option to submit your print into our student satellite gallery at The Manor Theater.

Pre-Requisite: Introduction to Digital Photography class or equivalent with approval of instructor.

You should bring a digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera (with manual controls) or a mirrorless camera, and a tripod. Students in this class must be comfortable with ISO, aperture and shutter speed.

Instructor: Michael O’Neill

Professional studio lighting instruction in a relaxed environment.

If you have always wanted to master the art of portrait photography and studio lighting, now is your chance. We provide all the lighting equipment on site and will teach you how to use everything in a way that is not intimidating and creative so that you will be able to continue to practice what you learn after class. You will learn how to literally sculpt with light, utilizing multiple light sources, modifiers, gels and creatively controlled techniques. At the end of this four week course, you will have some amazing portraits and be experienced enough in using studio lighting to be able to practice on your own. During the four week course, students are also allowed Saturday access to use the studio lighting and continue to practice during scheduled lab hours.

At TLF, we believe that film photography is far from dead.

In fact, we love it so much that we brought our darkroom with us when we moved from Spirit Square to Plaza Midwood.

And to make this class even more amazing, we convinced Carolyn DeMeritt to teach it. If you aren’t familiar with her work, you should check it out at http://www.carolyndemeritt.com.

This comprehensive six week course will teach you how to use a 35mm camera, process your film, make contact sheets, and make prints from your own negatives. You will receive constant feedback and assistance from Carolyn as you go!
