Digital Collage: Part 1

August 4 / 10 AM – 5 PM

Instructor: Crista Cammaroto

Cost: $195 Members, $245 Non Members

The Digital Collage: Part One workshop will explore several methods of using selection tools to create collage hybrids, fantasies, and other digitally constructed realities. Students need to bring in four images of their own to combine into one. Then, using your own photography—as well as light appropriation from other media sources—each student will create one collage using several methods by the end of the day.

At this workshop, instructor Crista Cammaroto will cover the following topics:

Developing dexterity and finer craft methods with the following tools:

  • Lasso
  • Magic Wand
  • Color Range Selections
  • Mask Tool
  • Selections with Paths (if time permits)

Developing formal and narrative collage techniques to communicate the ideas inside your head, which includes:

  • Working a composition
  • Proper blending
  • Foreground background relationships
  • Telling a story or activating an abstract

Crista’s philosophy is to present some fantastic possibilities, demonstrate methods, aid and assist on those methods, and then help each student actualize their own work quickly. After showing examples, she will create and build a piece from scratch using the methods mentioned above. Demos will be followed by students re-creating the method with their own material.

All students will leave with more knowledge about the many ways to make digital collage with the selection tools of Photoshop and the compositional needs within the fictionalized space. Ideally, all students will have one print in hand at the end of the workshop.
